New Crossover Expected in 2017
Those who have followed the press concerning the Opel Meriva crossovers will no doubt know that we will be seeing one at the Paris Motor Show in September and that we will also see it before Christmas this year. Although most people will be aware that the new Meriva will be based on the Meriva II platform, but it is still a little bit of a mystery as to what is going to be under the bonnet. Will it be an upgraded 1.4? The 1.6? The 1.6 diesel? The 1.4 diesel? Or will it be the 2.0 petrol that is used in the Vauxhall Vivaro as the Meriva’s replacement. Time will tell.
A little while ago we took a look at the Opel Meriva at the Frankfurt Motor Show and now it is time to take a look at it in the U.K. There are two trims of the Opel Meriva in the U.K. and we will be concentrating on the B trim. The most noticeable difference between the Opel Meriva and the Meriva II is that the U.K. version gets a roof-mounted spoiler, side skid plates, rear bumper extensions and new tail-lights. As for the engine, we can’t tell if the Meriva will keep the same 1.4 petrol and 1.4 diesel engines as it does in the Meriva II but we would suspect that the 1.4 petrol version will be replaced by the 1.6 petrol that is found in the Vivaro (an idea that is currently being explored by the Meriva). The diesel is unlikely to stay as it is the only engine in the Meriva II that is not offered in the Meriva.
This new Opel Meriva is a family crossover and it seems that the family car element of the car has been taken away. The Meriva II is no longer a family car and what is missing from the family crossover is the wagon version. There is still a Mercedes-Benz version of the Meriva, but this is not a bad thing as the version of the Meriva in the Mercedes-Benz version is the best in the range.
